May Care Task #2: Upload a new profile photo

Hi there,

Last week, your business care task involved taking a few photos of yourself in reasonable lighting (link in case you missed it). I hope you wound up with a few that you like.

This week, we'll be updating your photo in the various places where you show up online in a professional capacity.

I've provided a list of places you might want to check, although you may have a few accounts that aren't on my list.

Your profile picture doesn't have to be perfect. Remember that you can change it any time! If you don't love this photo, you can change it again when you get one that feels more aligned.

Updating your photo regularly (at least 1-2x/year) is a way to demonstrate care and thoughtfulness in the way you communicate, and it means that people can recognize you more easily if you meet in person.

I updated my photos in various places while putting together this message, and it took about 7 minutes. You've got this.

Warmly,

Camille

💌 May Care Task #2: Upload new profile pictures

Pick a new/refreshed photo that you'd like to use as a profile picture and spend about 15 minutes updating your photo in various places.

Don't worry about updating the written content of your profiles (we'll do that later!).

Here are some places you might have profile pictures that need updating:

  • Your website: Check homepage, about, contact, blog author section, and any menus/footers.

  • Social media accounts

    • YouTube channel/avatar

    • LinkedIn personal and company pages

    • IG, Facebook, BlueSky, TikTok, Substack, Pinterest, keep going...

  • Practice Management, Video Conferencing, or Class Management platforms (include your own + any places where you show up frequently as a student/participant)

    • EMR (Practice Better, Healthie, etc.)

    • Zoom, Teams, etc.

    • Calendly or other scheduling software

    • Circle, MightyNetworks, Zenler or other community platforms

  • Email and/or newsletter signature blocks

  • Google and any other email account profile photo (Protonmail, which I use, doesn't allow profile photos, in case you use it, too!)

  • Gravatar

Yay! You did it. Leave a comment letting me know if there were other places you updated your photo not mentioned above (I'll update the list!) and how it went to receive some gold stars.

🌟 Extra Suggestions 🌟

  • You might need to resize your photos for some accounts. Here's how to do that:

    • Choose a resizing tool: You probably have built-in software on your computer that can resize photos (Photos app on Windows/Mac, Preview on Mac). You can also resize using Canva, inPixio, or ImageResizer.

    • Maintain aspect ratio: When resizing, make sure “Maintain aspect ratio” or “Lock proportions” is checked to avoid distortion. You may need to crop first if the account requires a square image.

    • Save the resized photo as a JPG or PNG file. Use a new file name to keep the original photo unchanged.

  • Whether you need to resize or not, I strongly recommend that you create a folder on your main computer/device called "current profile pics" or something similar. I keep this folder in my "Downloads" area for easy access. Add a high resolution file of any photos you're using to the folder, along with any edited/smaller versions of your profile pictures. Now you can easily find these if you run across a stray account later & need to update/add a photo.

  • Consider adding alt-text to your photo when platforms allow it, which makes your image accessible to people using screen readers. Here are some guidelines for adding alt text to headshots, and some general best practices for writing alt text on all sorts of images.
