Hi there,
This week's business care task is a bit more involved than usual, but it has the potential to save you quite a bit of money: you'll be reviewing your recurring business expenses and cancelling things you don't need/aren't using.
In this moment in time, a lot of folks are experiencing or expecting a dip in revenue (although not everyone!). It's important to be clear-eyed about how you're spending money and to make a plan for what you might be able to adjust if needed.
I've shared some basic recommendations for how to review your recurring expenses in the video associated with this message and in the written instructions below.
If you'd like to do this work together, you're invited to a guided co-working session on April 23 from 2-3 pm ET. We'll be reviewing our business expenses and filling in a worksheet to make the process a bit smoother. Paid subscribers, you can find your code to attend free here. Others can sign up for $10. It will be recorded in case you can’t attend live!
Warmly,
Camille
💌 April Care Task #3: Review Recurring Business Expenses
Log into your bank account and your business credit card account (if relevant) or your bookkeeping software/spreadsheet if it is up to date.
Look through any recurring or subscription-based business expenses over the past 6 months (or 12 if you're playing catch-up). Make a list of each + how much you are paying.
Note whether each expense is monthly or annual (or some other cadence). If annual, write down when the next renewal will be.
Make a sub-list or highlight/mark recurring expenses that you consider essential.
Next create a sub-list or highlight/mark in a different way recurring expenses that you no longer use or don't need.
Finally, create a sub-list or highlight/mark in a 3rd way recurring expenses that are borderline. You could get rid of them, but you'd rather not unless necessary.
Cancel any recurring expenses that you don't need. See video above for a pep talk about this.
If you don't have time to cancel these right now, make a task to cancel each one and add these tasks to your "to do" list over the next few weeks.
Save your list of borderline expenses so that you can easily find it if you need to further reduce expenses later.
Yay! You did it. Leave a comment letting me know how it went to receive some gold stars. Did you save some money? Learn anything interesting?
🌟 Bonus Activities 🌟
Don't have a business bank account? I highly recommend that you get one ASAP. Check with your local credit union, or consider an online business bank account like Novo.
If you identify annual subscriptions that you're keeping for now, add a recurring task to your calendar to review the subscription about 1 week before it's due to renew. You can make your life easier by linking to the product's login page and noting the amount you're paying annually within the task. If you decide to cancel, you can delete the task.
Of the recurring payments you listed as essential or borderline, are there options to reduce these costs? For example, are you paying for the highest tier of the plan when you only need the medium or lowest tier? Would it be possible to switch to a different email service provider for a substantial yearly savings? Note any possibilities, even if you aren't going to make a change right now.
✔️ Other Reminders
If you just paid your taxes from 2025 and realized that you need a bookkeeper, I've loved working with Let's Do the Books, which has flexible fees based on your income from month-to-month.
Paid subscribers have access to my weekly planning video. If you haven’t yet, take about 15 min to reflect on last week and get yourself set up for the week ahead.
Co-working restarts for paid subscribers on Wednesday, May 1 from 2-3 pm ET. We meet every Wednesday through early August. This is the perfect time to work on your weeekly business care task, to catch up on client notes, do your bookkeeping, etc.
